Learn Digital Marketing Skills

The digital marketing space has proved to be an amazing period for me. You can enjoy the same successes and break through the worry and procrastination of making that first step into creating your content and sharing it with the world.

Today, I help organisations in the arts, museums, heritage and culture sectors to become more confident and successful at attracting visitors to their locations.

I'm not a guru, entrepreneur or super powerful influencer. I'm a normal person like you and I enjoy helping others see that it's possible to be successful, even with a very small audience.

So you think you’re good at writing marketing videos? Meet Ralph. He’s just a one eyed rabbit. Right?

Utterly brilliant. Meet Ralph. Ralph is in a film created by Taika Waititi and also includes Ricky Gervais. What's not to like? Two people at the top of their game when it comes to comic timing and the subtleties of humour. Ralph's a one eyed rabbit with tinnitus. Ok, so that's kind of funny and you're waiting for the punch line. Ralph has a secret super power, right? He's a rabbit by day, super hero by night, right? You want to know more about Ralph. Taika's voices for this type … [Read more...] about So you think you’re good at writing marketing videos? Meet Ralph. He’s just a one eyed rabbit. Right?

The 3 step formula for a good April Fool social media spoof and your essential humour warning

By Neill Watson Leave a Comment

April Fools Day can be a day when the social media and digital marketing teams can step out and have fun. However the 1st of April can also be a day when, in social media marketing, you can crash and burn if your judgement is off. Good April Fools Day content on social media requires some essential thoughts, some serious empathy and a degree of skill in coming up with a successful subject. I've written a few half decent April Fools gags in my time as a writer in the digital space, so I … [Read more...] about The 3 step formula for a good April Fool social media spoof and your essential humour warning

Artificial Scarcity and Why It Sucks in Selling

By Neill Watson Leave a Comment

If you spend any time at all online you will have seen this tactic used to motivate people into action. The email signup or free training course signup box that says "Sign up now while registration is open." The human trigger that you could miss out. It's called FOMO - Fear of Missing Out. Too often, it's artificial. It's the concept that something is a limited edition or has scarcity and that you had better not miss out. Now, as a marketing tactic FOMO can work very well. However, the Fear … [Read more...] about Artificial Scarcity and Why It Sucks in Selling

Do You Really Need a Website Any More? Here’s Why You Need a Website More Than Ever

By Neill Watson Leave a Comment

I had an interesting conversation recently with a friend of mine. He’s a professional sportsman and working hard at developing a brand. We were chatting about some of the promotional things that had succeeded for him over the last twelve months plus, as ever, the things that didn't work. Including the website, creating content, copy writing and relative lack of progress in those areas. Like many people early on in the task of personal brand building, he is working hard on social media … [Read more...] about Do You Really Need a Website Any More? New to Home Remote Working? Here’s How to Get Started

By Neill Watson Leave a Comment

With the massive changes that appear to be happening to our way of life in the short term right now, it occurred to me that for many people who are used to commuting to an office each day, this is going to be a big, big shock. For many people, the structure of a Costa Coffee in the cup holder, packed lunch on the passenger seat, a daily workplace and being part of an organisation, is a fundamental thing that they need in order to work. Take this away and you may well find yourself feeling a … [Read more...] about New to Home Remote Working? Here’s How to Get Started

Sadly, Why Wemark Was Always Doomed to Fail, Here’s The Positives You Can Take From It.

By Neill Watson Leave a Comment

It’s with a heavy heart that I heard of the failure of the Wemark stock photography project. However is wasn’t a surprise. If you’re a non-photography person, to explain, Wemark promised much to image creators who wished for a more equitable share of stock photo revenue. Perhaps it could even spell the start of a re-emergence of stock images as a viable revenue stream? They were optimistic, the team behind it seemed ethical and professional and I have no reason to doubt otherwise.  … [Read more...] about Sadly, Why Wemark Was Always Doomed to Fail, Here’s The Positives You Can Take From It.

Beginners guide to digital marketing – and I MEAN beginners

By Neill Watson Leave a Comment

“I don’t understand digital marketing. I hate it, I wish it would go away!” This has happened twice now in less that a week. And while to me, digital marketing is so obvious that I cannot believe that others can’t see it, to other people it is a form of eternal frustration that they don’t understand it. So I had to ask myself the question to try and help. "Why is digital marketing so hard for some people to understand?" If you’re looking for help with digital marketing and social media … [Read more...] about Beginners guide to digital marketing – and I MEAN beginners

The Complete and Utter Beginners Guide to #Hashtags

By Neill Watson Leave a Comment

Hashtags are a surprisingly mis-understood area of social media. It's alarming how many clients I talk to don’t have even a basic grasp of how they work. Worst of all, people who didn’t understand hashtags were scared of sounding stupid by asking that really simple question: "How do hashtags work and how to I use them in my social media channels more effectively?" If you want a guide to hashtags and mentions, there’s no need to feel stupid when you ask for an explanation. Don’t … [Read more...] about The Complete and Utter Beginners Guide to #Hashtags

When to Automate and When Not to Automate Your Social Media

By Neill Watson Leave a Comment

Creating content for social media channels is hard sometimes. Even people who’ve been on social media for years sometimes struggle to find the time to create good articles. I am guilty of that myself sometimes and by now, I really should know better. So it’s tempting to sign up for an automated service that promises to go out there and do it all for you. After all, we can automate so many things in our busy lives these days, why on earth would you want to do social media manually? There are … [Read more...] about When to Automate and When Not to Automate Your Social Media

How to Generate Unguessable Passwords and Never Forget Them

By Neill Watson Leave a Comment

Working on some content for a clients website recently, I asked them to ping me over their Wordpress Admin login. “Oh, it’s just the same as the others” was the reply. I’d done several sessions of work that included helping set up iCloud, Twitter, Facebook pages and other elements of his online business to help them save time when adding content to their channels. “What, they’re all the same? So you don't have a system of unguessable passwords?” “I know, we should do something about it. It’s … [Read more...] about How to Generate Unguessable Passwords and Never Forget Them

Having Problems With Your Mac OSX .Zip Files Becoming .CPGZ Files? Read On..

By Neill Watson 13 Comments

Just a very quick blog post that will hopefully save you a lot of time and frustration if you're running Mac OSX and having trouble opening a .zip file. The symptoms: You download a .zip file, lets call it 'downloads.zip' and double click to open it as usual, just as you've done many times before, right? Only this time, you don't see an un-archived folder, you see either a duplicate named 'downloads_2.zip' or a file called 'downloads.zip.cpgz' So you double click again and you see the same … [Read more...] about Having Problems With Your Mac OSX .Zip Files Becoming .CPGZ Files?
